Internet Explorer: Reasons Why it Sucks

Posted by google Chrome on May 20, 2009

I have had several recent conversations about why not to use Internet Explorer, and they prompted to make a handy list I could refer people to online.

I use and recommend FireFox for a reason – it is stable, it is constantly updated, and works with most web sites. It has issues of its own – it can be a memory hog, for example – but it is by far what I consider the best browser right now. I also like Safari, Opera, and Camino.

As technology is in a constant state of change and flux, certain proprietary software types can’t, or won’t, keep up. Because they don’t acknowledge the malleability of the internet, they encounter problems when you try to use them.

So what are some concrete reasons behind my recommendation against Internet Explorer in general, and my refusal to design for any version earlier than IE7? (And my reason behind refusing to design for future IE versions at all.)

Common Internet Standards Ignored

The internet works as a cohesive unit only because all makers of browsers and web sites adhere to certain commonly accepted standards of design and use. Microsoft consistently ignores these standards in favor of being proprietary. this means they would rather everyone be forced to use their software model than change their model to meet fast changes and increasing demand for cross platform and cross browser compatibility.

This makes Internet Explorer the hardest browser to work with. If I design a web site and it isn’t working in FireFox or Safari, for example, the tweak to fix the error is small, because they both accept the same standard of design and use. If it doesn’t work in IE, forget it. The tweak to make it happen in IE is massive and time consuming. I already spent huge amounts of time designing the page and getting it to work in four common browsers, I don’t want to spend additional days on end trying to make IE “see” it.

ActiveX Is The Debil

Safety is another huge issue with IE. Other browsers do not use or accept ActiveX and Active Scripting, two Microsoft applets that allow people to access your browser for various programs. These two programs allow someone else the possibility of controlling your computer, and open a huge barn door for viruses, adware, spy ware, malware and phishers to come strolling leisurely through.

Go ahead and use your virus software and your firewall – as long as you also use IE, you may as well give it up. You will continue to get malware on a regular basis, clogging your computer’s arteries, causing slowdown and crashes and possibly putting your data at risk. Of course, any virus or malware can still get on the machine of someone using one of the other browsers. The main difference is that the users of other browsers more often have to actually open a file or interact with it in some way to allow it in with them, and IE lets malware in for you.

Does Not Accept Extensions and Add Ons

No software can accommodate the complete wishes of its user base. It’s impossible. Other browsers, like FireFox and Safari, acknowledge this by allowing third party programmers to build extensions and add ons that handle the missing features, making every one happy. Internet Explorer demonstrates great hubris by not allowing their user base to create or add features that address issues with their software and its lack of compatibility with so many things.

I’m not the only one who thinks IE’s hubris is damaging. There have been several suits filed in various places wanting IE to no longer be tied to Windows, and to be forced to be more compatible with web standards. The most recent of these is the Opera suit in the EU.

Ugly Web Spaces

Have you ever viewed a web page designed solely with IE in mind in another browser? They are hideous, non functional, clunky pages in every case, on every other browser. Safari does the best job of “fixing” the looks of an IE page, but it can’t do much to fix the way they work (or don’t). Thinking the web still has to be hard to use and ugly is just wrong. The moment you switch to any other browser, your mind will opened to a beautiful looking, easy to use, functioning web.

Overwrites

When you install IE, you allow it to overwrite your system DLL files. The files it installs are not 100% compatible in many cases, mainly because it not only refuses to be compatible with much of the web, but with its own operating system as well. This can lead to system slow down and crashes. Add in the malware issues mentioned above and you have a real morass on your hands.

Java Issues

Did you know that Microsoft Java is not the same as the Java everyone else uses? I would be willing to bet you didn’t. I’d also be willing to bet you’ve experienced the frustration of going to page with Java applets on the recommendation of friends or colleagues who have been using it flawlessly in other browsers, only to find it doesn’t work right for you.

this is just another example of IE refusing to comply with the standards everyone else uses. They want you to have to use Microsoft products and Windows, and they think shutting you off from most of the web’s functionality will convince you that is necessary. It just isn’t so. You can use FireFox and still use your Microsoft programs. Changing browsers won’t blow up your computer – it will just open new doors to you online.

Linux Incompatibility

This makes no sense to the average web user, but Internet Explorer’s continued incompatibility with Linux is an issue for a very tech savvy sector of the online market.

There are so many reasons not to use Internet Explorer I had some difficulty putting them into a list. In fact, there are so many I keep thinking I forgot a few. Did I? Let me know if I did.

Customize your Firefox 3

Posted by google Chrome on May 20, 2009

Firefox 3’s initial launch was one of the most heavily downloaded programs ever. At one point 5,000 downloads were being performed every minute. If you are one of the adopters of Firefox 3, the browser’s flexibility has to be at the top of your preference list. Firefox 3 is just as easily customizable as earlier versions and can be a real pleasure to set up just the way you like it.

To begin modifying your Firefox the best place to start is the about:config list, first go to the Location Bar, type in about:config and press Enter. You make whatever changes you desire. Now just restart your browser, not your whole computer

, and the changes will have taken effect.

Let’s start our Firefox Extreme Makeover with a few of the more popular mods:

1) Tweak The Cache: Firefox 3 caches up to half a Gigabyte of data from the web sites you surf. Some people don’t want to give up half a Gig of their hard drive space, and some users would like to maintain even more content offline. Find and double-click browser.cache.offline.capacity. The default amount is 512000 kilobytes or 512MB. Change this number to your preferred amount (remember… in KB, not MB) and click OK.

2) Use Finicky Firefox 2 Add-Ons: Most of the more popular add-ons for Firefox 2 will work well with the new version, but there are some that will refuse to do their thing. If you are enamored with your favorite Firefox 2 add-ons, just right-click in the about:config list of settings and choose New, Boolean. Wait for the prompt, then type extensions.checkCompatibility and press Enter. Wait for another prompt, choose false and press Enter. Now redo the whole process above except instead of typing extensions.checkCompatibility, type extensions.checkUpdateSecurity. Complete the process and your Finicky Firefox add-ons should work just fine. Keep in mind that this process tells Firefox to no longer check the compatibility and security settings
of your add-ons, so you might be leaving yourself open for a hack attack.

3) Move The Disk Cache
: If you have multiple hard drives, you will likely notice a performance boost by placing the Firefox Disk Cache on a drive other than your boot drive where Windows resides. This speed increase is especially noticeable if one of your drives (other than C:) is a fast Raptor-type or other high performance model. Just create a new preference in about:config. Type browser.cache.disk.parent_directory into the next dialog box then press Enter. In the Value dialog box, enter c:\folder, (or the appropriate disk letter) with the folder name where you want to place the file.

4) Control Your Zoom: Firefox 3 can magnified or reduce the entire page, text and images together. The problem with this zooming is that when all elements on the page are increased you can end up with some elements to disappear right off the edge of your window. You don’t need to plunge into about:config for this change. Just choose View, Zoom, Zoom Text Only and now your images will stay the same while your text will vary.

5) Just For Fun: Type about:robots in the Location Bar and start having fun with androids!

Make your Firefox Fast Again Without Re-Installation

Posted by google Chrome on May 19, 2009

With time, Firefox becomes very slow, bloated with too many extensions, themes, toolbars, temporary files and in some cases it occupies the CPU memory too much. Do you want to make it fast without reinstalling? There is a simple solution.

After most people install Firefox, they keep adding so many extensions and , themes which, for some reason, slows down the speed of Firefox. It is still faster than Internet Explorer, but nevertheless slow.

You might have tried various methods such as uninstalling the extensions, some themes, some cases the toolbars, removed temporary files stored in the computer etc., still you will find the same, slow speed of Firefox. It is a problem nobody could find out the reason why.

Luckily for us, Labnol has a solution. Just follow these simple steps and your Firefox will look faster than ever before.

Step 1: First export all your bookmarks to a folder because we will need them later.

Go to Bookmarks –> Organize Bookmarks –> File –> Export.

By this step you will save the bookmarks, which you can retrieve later for your new Firefox Profile.

Step 2: Go to Start –> Run –> Type “Firefox –P” or as shown below in the picture.

Step 3: Click the “Create Profile” button, while keeping your old profile intact (usually it is called default), so if you don’t like the new profile you can revert back to your old one easily. Make a new profile with “Create Profile” button and then click “Start Profile”.

That’s it, your Firefox will be turbocharged and the speed of your browsing will be obvious with this solution. Now to get all your bookmarks again do the same as you did in Step 1, except for the last one.

Go to Bookmarks –> Organize Bookmarks –> File –> Import.

You may have also made changes in the Firefox Dictionary, if you have added a number of words, then you copy “persdict.dat” word list file from your old profile (check the Program Files – Mozilla Folder) and copy it into your new profile name.

One disadvantage is there will be no Fox add ons, so you have to reinstall the favorite ones again, but at least you can install only the ones you need most.

This new profile will make the Firefox faster and it won’t occupy your CPU too much so the computer won’t crash.

Again if you don’t like the one or still want to access your old one just do the following and click the old profile (default) and will revert back to older version.

Go to Start –> Run –> Type “Firefox –P”

Everything will be intact.

I did the same it works like a charm, only problem I had to reinstall a few extensions and toolbars, but the new one is much faster. Let me know if you have any questions.

Step 8. Install autoHideStatusbar add-ons

This add-ons hides the statusbar. The statusbar is shown back when hovering a “sensitive zone” with the mouse and can be shown back when a page loads or when hovering a link, according to the preferences.
